Aldosterone is a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex and is the principle mineralocorticoid controlling sodium and potassium balance[1].

In vascular smooth muscle cells, aldosterone inhibits nitrite production in a dose-dependent manner, which is induced by interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Aldosterone inhibits mRNA expression of NO synthase. And reduce the accumulation of nitric oxide synthase protein. In conclusion, aldosterone inhibits NO synthesis in vascular smooth muscle cells under IL-1β stimulated conditions[2].

Aldosterone (0.72 mg/kg/day, 14 days) caused a slight increase in blood pressure in male mice (14 mmHg). Aldosterone can also increase the production of superoxide in the cerebral arteries of mice and promote mRNA expression of chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 7 (CCL7), CCL8 and IL-1β in the brain[3].
