Deamido bleomycin A 2 is the major catabolite of bleomycin. Bleomycin Sulfate (also known as NSC125066) is a glycopeptide antibiotic and an anticancer agent for squamous cell carcinomas with IC50 of 4 nM in UT-SCC-19A cells. Bleomycin sulfate is a mixture of the sulfate salts of basic glycopeptide antineoplastic antibiotics isolated from Streptomyces verticillus. It forms complexes with iron that reduce molecular oxygen to superoxide and hydroxyl radicals which cause single- and double-stranded breaks in DNA and also induce lipid peroxidation, carbohydrate oxidation etc. Metabolic inactivation of the antitumor antibiotic bleomycin is be mediated exclusively via the action of bleomycin hydrolase, a cysteine proteinase that is widely distributed in nature.
