Elastase is a serine protease that breaks down elastin and is produced in the pancreas. Elastase is produced as an inactive proelastase and activated by trypsin in the duodenum. Elastase plays an important role in inflammation. Elastase can cleave collagen, clotting factors, fibrous elastin, proteoglycan, α 1- antichymotrypsin and TNF-α. Elastase plays critical roles in the development of emphysema, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary emphesema and rheumatoid arthritis. Elastase is isolated from human neutrophil and is an active enzyme.
20-22 units per mg protein. One unit is defined as the amount of enzyme that hydrolyzes one micromole of Meo-Suc-Ala-Pro-Val-pNA per minute at 25℃ in 100 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.5, with 500 mM NaCl. |
